A Guide to Glass Door Handles

They can be somewhat overlooked, but handles for glass doors are one of the most critical parts. Door handles see you throughout the day, so it’s important to get them right. It’s especially important on glass partitions in order to minimise those pesky fingerprints.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the options so you can walk away feeling that you’ve got a handle on the situation.

We’ll cover styles, finishes and mounting options available, so that you can find the perfect fit for your interior design theme. Whether you’re planning a new installation or updating an older system, we hope you’ll use this guide to help you make an informed decision.

What to Consider

First things first, what do you need to consider when it comes to choosing a glass partitioned door handle?

The most important thing to think about is who is most likely to use your door handle. If you’re in an office space, you’re likely to have high traffic in some areas and a range of ages to consider, so opting for a handle which is robust and suits the masses would be a great choice.

If the doors are mostly being used by older individuals or those with limited mobility, you’ll want to consider a handle that has a good grip and is easy to operate. Whereas if your space is focused on children, you’ll want to look for handles with smooth edges and a secure fastening to avoid potential accidents.

It’s also important to consider maintenance and cleaning. If you have a high footfall, a polished metal finish, like chrome or stainless steel, might not be the best fit for you as it will show fingerprints and smudges. If you are looking for easy maintenance, you’ll want to consider finishes that are resistant to marks in order to help maintain a polished look with minimal effort. A brushed finish would be a good option.

It’s also important to consider the environment of the room. For instance, you’re picking a handle for a bathroom or kitchen, you’ll need to consider that it can be humid, meaning you’ll need to opt for a more durable and corrosion-resistant finish.

Your last consideration would be aesthetics! If you have an existing style, it’s important to pick a handle which complements its surroundings.

Types of Glass Door Handles

Let’s get into the type of door handles you can pick from! From push/pull to guardsman handles, it’s good practice to consider how it will look, coupled with the practicalities.

Option 1: D Handles

The D Handle has a distinctive shape but is also comfortable to grip. Due to its grip characteristics, it’s a great ergonomic solution which is suitable for a wide range of environments like offices, schools and healthcare units. Being available in a variety of lengths, diameters and finishes, they make a versatile option for a framed and frameless glass partition door

For this glass partitioning project in London, the client opted for a great combination of frameless glass with a D bar handle, which offers a modern yet welcoming feeling.

Option 2: Guardsman Handles

Becoming increasingly more popular as a fantastic modern alternative, a guardsman handle is more robust and larger in profile. It’s an ideal choice if you want to make a visual statement as they make up a larger portion of the door, or even the full height of the door.

They are often seen in corporate entrances, high end retail spaces, spas, and more! The size makes it easier for those with limited mobility issues and accessibility.

Our project for a car dealership in London is a perfect example of showcasing a guardsman handle, which takes up about half the height of the door. It complements the space and helps give a stunning, impactful finish.

Option 3: Lever Latch Handles

One of our most popular handles is the lever latch. Combining both a handle and a lock, it adds another level of security for workplaces and homes across the UK.

We’re able to install this solution with both frameless glass doors and framed glass doors.

Choosing Your Perfect Finish

The style of the handle has been ticked off, but what about the finish? This is important to consider, because even if it looks nice, it doesn’t mean it’s going to be the most practical choice.

Two of our most popular choices are stainless steel and matte black. We all know stainless steel as a material which stands up to the job, it’s great for durability, easy maintenance and modern appeal. It also pairs seamlessly with most glass partition systems, especially those with clean, minimal profiles.

Matte black choices have increased in popularity due to their contemporary look and easy maintenance.
